A week ago today, I gave a big squawk-out to the city of Port Orchard in the state of Washington, where they were holding their annual Seagull Calling Contest. My post got a tremendous response, and dozens of balancing act readers showed up. That is, they mistakenly showed up at Port Orford, in the state of Oregon, a couple dozen miles down the coast from where I sit, and about 440 miles from Port Orchard. It would appear that a lot of my readers need to get a pair of readers. They do sell reading glasses for only $1 each at your local Dollar Tree®, you know.
Funny thing—nobody knows who came up with this special day. But they had the best of intentions. Laughter, you see, is alleged to relieve tension, boost your immune system, exercise idle abdominal and facial muscles, and offer relief from everyday stress.
All over the world, we gulls are inspiring our human friends to accomplish amazing feats of athleticism. Last month, I introduced you to the San Diego Gulls of ice hockey and the Salt Lake Gulls and San Francisco Seagulls amateur baseball teams. Here's the latest example I've discovered--
Thanks to everyone for the great feedback on Fun Fact Friday #1. Some of you expressed concern that I might be worried about my own life expectancy. What, me worry? Some of you also offered words of encouragement, like Spock's Vulcan salute—"Live Long and Prosper." I have my own versions... But I was puzzled by these words of encouragement: But I'm not troubled by having a relatively short lifespan. It really does have its advantages.
For instance, it's tough for anyone to accuse me of something illegal, immoral, or indefensible that I might have committed 20 or 30 years ago, because I wasn't even born yet! So I say, "Live like there's no tomorrow!" Hey, this is only a test anyway. (The Grass Roots, 1967)
